Presidential Press Secretary: A new phenomenon – a kind of “Samarkand Process of the SCO” observed
Samarkand hosted a briefing with the participation of Presidential Press Secretary Sherzod Asadov.
Mr. Asadov informed about the results of the 22nd Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
“The SCO Samarkand Summit has ended, and the participants are returning to their countries”, Mr. Asadov said. – Analyzing the fact that large-scale issues were discussed and several advanced decisions were adopted at the Samarkand Summit, we can rightly say that a new phenomenon – a kind of “Samarkand Process of the SCO” is being observed.
First, 44 documents were signed, thus reaching a record figure in the history of the SCO. They cover not only the current areas of SCO activity, but also start new formats and mechanisms. The conceptual programs in transport and economic connectivity, industrial and technological cooperation, digital development and green economy should be emphasized.
Second, the most important decisions were made to increase the membership of the SCO member states. A memorandum was signed with Iran on membership in the SCO. It was decided to start the process of accepting Belarus as a full member of the Organization. Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Maldives and Myanmar have received partner status. That is, we are witnessing that the SCO is moving from a regional organization to a platform of interregional cooperation, and this reflects the trends of regionalization in the world.
Third, for the first time in the 20-year history of the SCO, heads of state have taken a decision aimed at improving and modernizing the SCO. This major political step is based on the desire of the member countries to adapt the activities, goals and objectives of the SCO to the new realities. Moreover, this decision shows that the Organization must not stand still, it must adapt to the times and is capable of doing so.
Thus, Uzbekistan’s chairmanship in the SCO came to an end and for the first time passed to the Republic of India.
In conclusion, the Presidential Press Secretary expressed his gratitude to local and foreign media representatives who took part in the coverage of the Samarkand Summit and events held within its framework.
